Deconstructing and Reconstructing Clothing for Quilts
Supply List
- Clothing
- Variety of used clothing. It can be denim, T-shirts, dress shirts, ladies skirts, tops, special uniforms or memorable outfits. Avoid slinky garments or wool, and heavy garments like sweatshirts, sweaters, and coats. Poly is OK and expected.
- Your mixture should include jeans or pants, a buttoned top(s) of some kind, and a knit shirt(s).
- If you purchase used clothing, remember larger sizes contain more fabric.
- All clothing should be clean, but do not be concerned about stains and holes.
- Mechanical
Utility and sewing scissors
- 6x12 plus square rulers Any squares 3"-9" will work. Label your rulers so we can share.
- Rotary cutter with a new blade and 18x24 mat (or so)
- Seam ripper
- 1 pkg Denim or Universal 12-14 needles. You will need a larger size, but specialty needles are not necessary. Neutral poly/cotton thread. Make sure your needles and thread are of high quality.
- Sewing machine in good working order with regular feet. Utility, 1/4", and overlock feet will all be useful.
- Fabrics and Fabric Supplies
- 1 pkg Wide double fold bias binding Note: This will be used with denim so the color can be bright as an accent or blend. Or you can bring scraps and create a multicolored piece.
- Pellon Shape Flex SF101 stabilizer
- Looking at your assortment of clothing, decide on a neutral. Usually things like blues and tans work with most clothing especially the denims. There can be shades of the neutral but use tone or tones or solids. Your impact comes from the clothing, not what you add. For this workshop, and especially if you are using garage sale pieces, you can bring muslin. We will talk about adding colors to your designs, and it may be different from what you bring. But to try the methods, bring muslin. Bring at least a yard of fabric.
